Tutorials
From CREATE Wiki
While we try and keep a complete collection of hardware and software user manuals, step-by-step tutorials are often much more useful for new users. Here you will find tutorials specific to our studios here on campus as well as links to more general instructions for getting started with software such as Pro Tools and Logic.
Setting up Auxillary Inputs and Using Busses in Pro Tools
- 1. Make sure all of your audio tracks and the master fader are existant.
- 2. Create a new stereo/mono Aux Input in the Create New Tracks dialog.
- 3. Decide on which bus you want to send the audio, i.e. stereo bus x-y, or mono bus x.
- 4. In the Send section of the tracks you wish to bus, create a send to the bus you have decided to use.
- 5. Make sure you turn up the volume on the bus. Decide if you are using the bus pre- or post-fader, and check the 'pre' button on the send accordingly.
- 6. On the Aux Input channel you created in step 2, set the input to be the same as the bus you are using, i.e., stereo bus x-y or mono bus x.
- 7. Adjust the volumes on the sends and the Aux Input channels. If you are using the send post-fader, your main faders on the audio channels will need to be up in order to hear sound through the aux channel. If using the send pre-fader, send level is independent of fader level.
MIDI patch names in ProTools
OS X has changed the way in which MIDI patch names are done. See this page for more info: http://www.digidesign.com/support/tips/xnames.html
Fortunately, there is a resource for these files that can be found at. http://www.digicake.com/midnam/MOTU.zip
If the patches of any of the synths are not labled, you can select the correct *.midnam file in the Lambada/Audio/MIDI Patch Names/Digidesign/* folder.
Setting up Automation for Plug-Ins in Pro Tools
- 1. Decide which plugin you wish to use, and on which track you wish to use it. Insert the plugin on that track in the Insert section.
- 2. With the plugin window open, click the Auto button. This brings up a Plugin Automation dialog which lists all of the available features on the plugin that can be automated.
- 3. Add the feature you wish to automate by either double-clicking on the feature or highlighting then pressing the Add button. After adding all the features you want, click Done.
- 4. The features you have just selected are now available for automation. You can draw in automation in the same way you drew in automation for volume and panning changes. Select the feature you wish to automate from the drop-down menu directly underneath the track name (where it will say Waveform, Volume, Pan, etc).
- 5. You are now ready to draw in the automation.
Why don't I hear anything?
- STEP 1 - Unplug patch cords from the front of the patch bay
- STEP 2 - Make sure the correct faders are up on the mixer
- STEP 3 - Make sure the mixer's input channels are assigned to bus 1&2 (check the panning)
- STEP 4 - Make sure that the DIGI 002's MUTE button is OFF
- STEP 5 - Make sure that the speakers are ON
- STEP 6 - Make sure you have the correct settings for the software you are using
- STEP 7 - Turn the DIGI002 off. Wait 5 seconds. Turn the DIGI002 back on.
- STEP 8 - Reboot - Repeat Step 6
- STEP 9 - If you still cannot get sound, then log the problem in the Studio Xenakis Log
Recording into the computer
- Using the microphones
- The microphones are plugged into channels 1&2 of the mixer. You should be able to check the mics to make sure they are working by simply bringing up the faders on channles 1&2 to unity gain. If you do not hear anything, go to Why don't I hear anything? -- Lambada
- The microphones are wired through the direct ouputs of the mixer into channels 1&2 of the Digi 002. As long as the mixer is getting a good signal, the Digi 002 should be getting a good signal.
- If recording into Peak, make sure that the inputs are set to 1&2 for microphone recording. Basically, the inputs in Peak should mirror whatever channels on the board you are trying to record.
- If you are unable to record the microphone input into lambada, try the following steps:
- 1) Remove all patch cords from the front of the patch bay
- 2) Reboot
- 3) Test the microphones (see the "Using the Microphones" section above
- 4) Make sure that the "trim" is set to about the half-way mark on channels 1&2
- 5) Open the System Preferences, select the sound control panel, select the input tab, make sure that you are getting input. If not, goto step 1.
- 6) Make sure you have the correct settings for the software you are using Lambada
- 7) Make sure the mic/line button on the Digidesign 002 is set to line input (which is the up position)
- 8) If none of this works, then log the problem in the STUDIO LOG -- XENAKIS and email your TA or the Technical Coordinator
Using the Projector
The projector should automatically display what is on the computer.
Follow these steps if it does not:
1) Make sure the projector is turned on (you should see a green light on the projector?)
2) Make sure the projector switch (on the front desk) is turned to A.
2) Open System Preferences, Open the Displays Control Panel, Click the Arrangement Tab, make sure that Mirror Displays is turned on
3) If this doesn't work, sleep the computer and wake it up.
4) If the projector is still not displaying, restart the computer
NOTE: To use the studio log, hit the edit button at the top of the page. Copy the form shown below (include the dotted lines) and paste it at the bottom of the page. Fill it out.

Nature of Problem (Please be as specific as possible. Include a list of which computer you are using, the applications in use, error messages shown, any outboard hardware involved, and the specific actions taken at the time the problem occured):
Using ProTools on Lambada, the computer was unable to recognize the DIGI002. The error also stated that the DIGI002 might be in use by another application. No outboard hadware was involved. The computer was rebooted.
SOLUTION: The DIGI002 hardware device needed to be rebooted. This involves turning the DIGI002 off for 5 seconds, and then turning it back on. . This problem has now been documented in the Why don't I hear anything? -- Lambada page.

Nature of Problem -
While playing a 4-channel ProTools session on Lambada, no sound was coming out of speakers 3-4. I pushed the bus button marked "3-4" under channels 3-4 on the mixer. Audio started coming out, but in addition, speakers 3-4 began producing a horrible loud beeping sound that was not part of the audio in the PT session, and the red overload light appeared on the mixer (not the Digi002). I immediately brought all faders down, but the red OL (overload) light continued blinking until I quit ProTools. I tried a second time, and the red light did not come on, but the green audio lights kept blinking after the quitting of Pro Tools. Perhaps I missed a step with the bussing or should have used the patch bay?
Any ideas?
SOLUTION: To set up quadraphonic playback from the DIGI002 you have to manually patch the 3&4 outputs of the DIGI002 (on the patch bay) to the mixer in channels. For example, on the patch bay, patch from DIGI002 3&4 to mixer in 5&6. Bus mixer channels 5&6 to outputs 3-4 (this is done by pressing the 3-4 button on the mixer channels). I was unable to reproduce the red or green flashing or the beeping sound, but I assume that the Kurzweil K2600 (normalled to mixer 3&4) was the culprit. A click track left running perhaps.

MIDI in Studio Xenakis is set up via the MOTU Midi Express Midi patch bay in the instrument rack. All MIDI controllable devices are plugged in the the Midi Express via MIDI cables, which is then connected to Lambada via USB. Instruments are plugged in as follows:
Channel 1 - Kurzweil K2600
Channel 2 - E-mu Proteus 2 Orchestral
Channel 3 - Roland Sound Expansion
Channel 4 - Lexicon Reverb
Audio-MIDI Setup
Located on the dock is Apple's Audio MIDI Setup. If this is not located in the dock, it can be found at Applications/Utilities. This program is used to setup how the Computer talks via USB/MIDI to the Midi Express (or any other MIDI device).
When you open the Audio Midi Setup, for studio Xenakis you should see multiple devices, including the Midi Express, the K2600, the Proteus, the Roland, the Lexicon, and the IAC driver. When all is set up properly, the four devices listed above should be connected to the Midi Express according the channels also listed above.
IF the Midi Express is greyed out, the computer does not recognize that it is there. Check to make sure the Midi Express is turned on. If it is not, turn it on. Lambada then (usually) senses that it is there and will re-instate the Midi Express; however, it will do so as a NEW device. You will need to delete the old Midi Express and reconnect the devices to the Midi Express by drawing lines between the ins and outs of the devices and the ins and outs of the Midi Express.

Studio Xenakis is configured to play back a stereo mix by default. However, it is quite simple to set up the system to play back four channels of sound.
Step 1:
Find the outputs of the Digidesign 002 device on the patch bay. Patch outputs 1,2,3,4 to ?
Step 2:
Make sure that your software is set up to output through the Digidesign 002 on channels 1-4.
Because the Digidesign hardware is necessary to output quadraphonically, programs that do not use the Digidesign hardware (Soundhack for example) cannot do 4 channel playback.',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051006172540',,10,0,0,0,0.20827495768,'20051006172540','79948993827459'),(959,0,'Recording_into_the_computer_--_VARESE','Studio Varese',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200036',,8,0,0,1,0.144580747031,'20051005200036','79948994799963'),(960,0,'Using_the_Patch_Bay_--_VARESE','Studio Varese',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200041',,6,0,0,1,0.334771520466,'20051005200041','79948994799958'),(961,0,'ProTools_Questions_--_VARESE','Studio Varese

Black coffee does not respond to midi input from the Roland JXP8.
Solution: The midi cable connecting the JXP8 to the black coffee was connected through the JXP8 MIDI Thru ... the MIDI Out cable of the JXP8 was routed to the MOTU MIDI device. To solve the problem, the JXP MIDI Out cable was routed to go to the black coffee. The MIDI Thru of the Black Coffee was then routed to the MOTU MIDI device in place of the JXP8 MIDI Out. This will allow for MIDI data from the JXP8 to be recorded in the computer though the Black Coffee MIDI Thru.

Yesterday I tried to patch ProTools 1 (mono) to the back of the Kurzweil Analog in, which
was the only way I could get a signal in at all. However, even though during recording
the Kurzweil said it was almost clipping, on playback it was -60dB of what it should be.
The attack was also distorted. I thought this might be a patching problem, but then I
went back to Peak and tried to play the sample using the virtual MIDI keyboard, and the
same distortion happened as on the Kurzweil(except that the signal was not too low this
time). This was weird, since the sample plays back fine in the waveform editor in Peak.
It sounds like I have two problems: 1, the attack distortion in Peak, and 2). the
patching to the Kurzweil, or some preference in the Kurzweil that's making the signal so
low on playback. (The faders were up).
Any ideas? Also, what's the standard way of patching from Peak or Protools to the Kurzweil in Varese? I don't remember. Any tips would be appreciated.

MIDI patch names in ProTools
OS X has changed the way in which MIDI patch names are done. See this page for more info: http://www.digidesign.com/support/tips/xnames.html
Fortunately, there is a resource for these files that can be found at. http://www.digicake.com/midnam/MOTU.zip
If the patches of any of the synths are not labled, you can select the correct *.midnam file in the Lambada/Audio/MIDI Patch Names/Digidesign/* folder.',,0,'128.111.93.60','20051118002528',,3,0,0,0,0.081208364328,'20051118002528','79948881997471'),(972,0,'Peak_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200223',,1,0,0,1,0.136129545532,'20051005200223','79948994799776'),(973,0,'SoundHack_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200229',,2,0,0,1,0.125742516739,'20051005200229','79948994799770'),(974,0,'SuperCollider3_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200234',,1,0,0,1,0.027093767545,'20051005200234','79948994799765'),(975,0,'Quicktime_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200240',,1,0,0,1,0.102393744394,'20051005200240','79948994799759'),(976,0,'ITunes_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200246',,1,0,0,1,0.01228230061,'20051005200246','79948994799753'),(977,0,'Final_Cut_Pro_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200251',,1,0,0,1,0.057673627853,'20051005200251','79948994799748'),(978,0,'Internet_Questions_--_Studio_Theremin','Studio Theremin',,0,'128.111.92.10','20051005200257',,2,0,0,1,0.33379518669,'20051005200257','79948994799742'),(979,0,'STUDIO_LOG_--_Studio_Theremin',,,0,'128.111.92.10','20051006222859',,3,0,0,0,0.322828795255,'20051006222859','79948993777140'),(980,0,'Kurzweil_K2600_--_XENAKIS','Studio Xenakis
