Because the 10 commandments are listed back in the Old Testament, some Christians who believe that it cease to apply to us existing in the New Testament. Then again, Jesus specifically proclaimed when He came down to us, that He didn't come to take out with his Father's laws from during the OT, but to fulfill them.
Here is this most significant verse:
"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:17-20)
Notice Jesus says that these moral laws will remain in place up to the point heaven and earth pass away.
There is a huge difference between the moral laws God offered the Jewish people in the OT and some of the ceremonial laws He gave them. A few of these formal laws will have no application for people these days in the NT, but all the moral laws continue to be in full play.
Main point here - when God the Father goes to the trouble to speak to with a man on the top of a mountain to give him 10 really special commandments, then literally has these 10 special commandments written on a tablet of stone by His own fingers, you see this is something that should be considered very, very seriously and not discarded because we're currently living in the NT.
Such 10 commandments are presented direct to us by the Lord are extremely special and they will all keep us on the right as well as narrow road with Him. They will function as a good compass and guide in this life as to precisely what we should be doing in our walk with the Lord and exactly what you should be keeping away from.
